Microsoft’s plans to invest nearly $700 million in a data center in West Des Moines have paid off as the Iowa Economic Development Authority Board approved $20 million in tax credits.

Iowa’s State Economic Development Director, Debi Durham, said “We’re seeing a lot of interest in this space. There may be more projects to come. We have created a business culture that fosters this development.”

Microsoft’s Christian Belady said in a statement, “The expansion supports the growing demand for Microsoft’s cloud services. The project represents our latest in efficient data center thinking.”

Microsoft began its investment in West Des Moines back in 2009 and owns 40 acres in the western suburb. Currently, about 50 employees work in the facility.

Clyde Evans, who leads the city’s economic development efforts said, “This shows their commitment to not only West Des Moines but to central Iowa and the state of Iowa.”

He then added “Competition out there is tough but I think certainly the state has some very attractive incentives that make us very competitive out there and the city certainly tries to do as much as we can without giving up the store.”
