Shadow of the Tomb Raider Review for PlayStation 4

Shadow of the Tomb Raider is a great conclusion to the story of Lara Croft, which has breathtaking views, tragedies, and an epic story. The third and last game of rebooted Tomb Raider series, which is developed by Eidos Montreal and Crystal Dynamics, and published by Square Enix, is going to be released on September 14, 2018 on Playstation 4, Xbox One, and Windows PC.

The game starts of with a glimpse of an Airplane crash and then to a Tomb in Mexico, which Lara is trying to explore and find the answer revolving around Trinity. This story is about race with time against Trinity, an organization, who was involved in death of Lara’s father. The narrative and story of the game is one of the plus point of this game, but also adds some horror feels. There were some tragic scene in the game as well, that shows what has happened because of Lara’s action.

At some tombs the audio setting and background music was setup in a way which gave me a real scare. Also the reason being introduction of new enemies. The game also introduces a new world, Hidden City of Paititi, which is situated in midst of Amazon Jungle, Peru. There are two hub areas shown in the game, one is Kuwaq Yaku, and Paiti. These areas are full of people and trades are possible. And Lara can get side quests from these areas.

Paititi is a beautiful city, which ancient Mayan culture and people still living away from technology and outer world. There are a lot of things to explore in this area, side quests collectible, most of the time I felt like exploring this area without worrying about any quests and story, as the beauty of Paititi made me get lost in the exploration. Also during a story mission, was finally able to see a Mayan Pyramid. One of the best part of my games is when you are trying to find the city of Paititi for the first time, the way to get to Paititi was the best with some of the best exploration views.

The game has introduced a lot of collectibles related to Mayan civilization and its culture. There were Murals, Maps, Crypts and Monoliths. Monoliths are of different types and need specific understanding of each language which can be achieved by reading Murals and other documents throughout the Map. The game still has all the previous gears and weapons from the previous game, pickaxe, box, shotgun, rifle and pistol. Shadow of the Tomb Raider provides players with the survival instincts again, for surviving the jungle and tombs. Combat feels the same as previous game but fresh adding certain new things like, adding usage of certain kind of plants to enable Focus, Health and Endurance during the combat. Stealth kills are the best to execute, as there are addition of Rope kills using the bow and hanging them on the trees while fighting through the Jungle.

Another addition to the game are the new Outfits and craftable outfits in the game. As the outfit provides additional benefits, one of them was after fighting Jaguar the special Jaguar outfit provides less noise and less visibility to the enemies. The game has primarily focused on adding more Puzzle challenges in the Tombs and explorations. All the Tombs feels fresh and nothing like the previous game. Some tombs are scary, some tombs gives a real challenge in solving the puzzle.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider Review for PlayStation 4

Overall my experience with Shadow of the Tomb Raider was one of the best so far, adding some great and beautiful exploration, making Lara a shadow and grow as a person as well throughout the story, while fighting Trinity and trying to stop the apocalyptic events. Eidos Montreal with Crystal Dynamics did a great job in keeping the legacy of Lara alive and giving a great conclusion to the story. Overall this game is a reminder for Lara that Tomb Raiding can go wrong sometime. I would give this game 9 stars.
