PAX South 2018 Impressions: Light Fall

PAX South 2018 Impressions: Light Fall

Light Fall is a 2D platformer from indie developer Bishop Games. Thanks to a successful Kickstarter campaign, Light Fall will be available on Steam and Nintendo Switch March 2018. It will be available on Xbox One and PS4 a few months later.

Light Fall is speedrunner’s dream of a platformer. All of the typical platformer stuff is there like running and jumping, but the usual double-jump has been replaced with a temporary platform known as the Shadow Core that summons underneath the player’s feet up to four times. Even when moving as fast as you can the platform just always seems to be in the right spot. At times I felt like I was surfing on the air. In the speedrunning parts of the level, it had a sort of Flappy Bird feel to it because it is just as important to time your falls just right as it is to time your jumps. There will be slower more puzzle-based parts where the player will summon the platform to block environmental hazards like lasers. Players can also play in speedrun mode that gets rid of all cutscenes, and adds a timer for leaderboards. It’s also possible to upload your own ghost and download other players’ ghosts to hone your skill or show the world why you’re the best.

The player will take control of a mysterious figure in the Forgotten World of Numbra. It is a land covered in darkness and filled with creatures that could be potential enemies or allies.  The game looks great and part of its Kickstarter campaign allowed fans to send in their own art designs or pictures to be a landmark present in the game. Most of the art designs I saw during the my hands-on time looked amazing.

I was born and raised in a town so small there were more cows than people. I joined the USAF as soon as I could, and I currently reside in San Antonio. I am a singer/songwriter on the side, but I've been a gamer since birth. I grew up with PlayStation and Nintendo, though, I don't discriminate between consoles and PC. I have a PC with a 3080, Steam Deck, and a PS5.
