PAX South 2018 Impressions: DEEP SKY DERELICTS

Deep Sky Derelicts is an indie game from Snowhound with tactical strategy/RPG elements and rogue-like elements and card combat. Early Access on Steam started November 2017. Its planned to release Spring 2018.

The player will be taking control an adept stateless scavenger in a grim dystopian future where mankind has split into two distinct classes. Privileged citizens who live on beautiful planets and the poor stateless folk forced to live off anything they can find scattered about on derelict stations and ships throughout the galaxy. Players will be controlling one of these scavengers with high hopes of finding an alien derelict ship somewhere in the Deep Sky sector in exchange for a sweet life amongst the rest of the privileged individuals on a natural planet.

Deep Sky Derelicts offers an interesting take on turn-based combat with its cards system. All the equipment the player has is infused with several cards that add tactical depth and a bit of randomness. These cards vary from attacks, defense, healing, and applied status effects to allies and enemies. Equipment can be unequipped, so the player can customize their squads to have more balance or go all out in one area. This structure allows for better control of your deck during combat.

The game also offers a lot in the realm of re-playability with its procedural generation of levels, missions, and loot. Levels are on a tile-based exploration that only allow for an allotted number of moves that create a sense of danger and urgency.
