DISCOLORED Review for Steam

DISCOLORED Preview for Steam

Hey who turned off the color?! Discolored wants YOU to find out! More specifically, the one man dream team of Jason Godbey (he, himself and only him!) challenges you to navigate a black and white world and restore it to its former technicolor glory. Mystery and mysterious organizations await in this unique first-person adventure – brought to you across the color spectrum!

As an unnamed agent of an unnamed organization, it is your job to investigate why a local diner has lost all of its color, and of course, return it to its former multicolored format. The gameplay is from a straightforward first-person perspective. You will roam around the environment collecting items and using them to solve puzzles – with the overall objective to get closer to restoring not one, but all of the color to the environment around you. For example, a fun puzzle involving using a crane on the moon (it is definitely an abstract type of game in the most fun way possible) will hopefully lead you to getting a blue record which, one played, restores the color blue to the environment. Changes such as these allow you to see items, entrances and systems in the environment that allow you to further modify all around you. I’m usually pretty adept at puzzle/adventure games, even when the answers get a bit obscure, but Discolored had me guessing and getting stuck quite a few times, as the combinations of environment changing and going between areas provide ample chance to test your skills, and although it may have you guessing what you have not tried yet in a frustrating manner, it is with an undercurrent of fun challenge.

The visuals need no real introduction, but the game is without a doubt vibrant and enjoyable to look at. The atmosphere is only amplified by the superb music, which is not only relaxing, it changes based on the environment. If it’s black and white, for example, expect a relaxing, yet oddly off-putting and slower tempo musical to make the environment feel unexplored, mysterious and alien.

Discolored is a unique, fun and impressive first-person adventure game. Colorful in nature and by design, made ever the more impressive as it is built by a one-man team. While the game has been delayed just a bit more into 2019, I highly recommend wishlisting the game if you are an aficionado of the adventure game/puzzle genre, or if you are just looking for a unique, eye-catching game to spend some time on. Make the change from black and white to color on your screen today in Discolored!

Your local neighborhood nutjob, gamer, and teacher! I'm an avid fan of many genres such as platformers, shooters, horror, etc. I am also an avid tabletop gamer - hugely into the worlds of Warhammer and all of their spinoffs. I'm a big believer in being objective - even if something is not my cup of tea, I want to talk about it on the objective level - is it well made, crafted with love, and with care for the fans? If so, that's a good game in my book for someone and well worth their hard earned dollarydoos!
