Top Gear Road Trip Review for iPhone

While I said that I enjoyed puzzle games in my Fliptate review, I have never found the more known puzzle games such as Bejeweled, Candy Crush, or even Angry Birds to be very compelling. I enjoy the game design and understand how they can become so addicting, but I think the fundamental reason why I can’t get into the game is the points and level completion system. Top Gear: Road Trip is one of these games, and while I myself can’t get super invested in this kind of game, I think it holds that same level of polish and fun that any popular puzzle game would.

Top Gear: Road Trip is a free to play game made by Motorious Entertainment for iOS and Android devices. Your goal of the game is to win as many races (levels) as you can, and secure the best vehicles and power ups for each consecutive race. You get the Gears, the games in game currency, from beating races and unlock special cars from placing 1st in races. The game also has a few other kinds of unique races, such as a competition where you see who can travel farthest with a rocket.

As for the races themselves, you must connect orbs of the same color in order to accelerate, the longer the chain, the more points you get, the faster you go. There are also orbs that double your special meter and activate turbo boosts. If in a tight spot, you can also use special abilities to help you or to obstruct rivals.

As a whole the game has a lot of fun, unique gimmicks that spice up each race.

While the game keeps things fresh on a level standpoint, as a whole the goal of the game seems too repetitive, just like the games I mentioned in the beginning of the review. Each level is fairly simple to clear, but sometimes you need to clear it more than once if you want to win stars. The aesthetics are also somewhat strange. It doesn’t detract from the gameplay, but it feels odd nonetheless. The most fundamental issue is that their is no finite “responses” to the puzzle: it doesn’t have the flow like in doing something you know well and there is no eureka moment midway into a level.

All this begin said, I know that games like this were all the rage back in the day, and plenty of people still can’t put those games down. It works very well as a game; don’t let my more personal taste shy you away from this one. As a whole, I give the game a 7 out of 10, for a well thought out level and game design and a good amount of variety to keep the levels fresh.
