Team Racing League Review for PC

One of the most universal gaming experiences is that of the multiplayer racing game. Casual and experienced gamers alike have all picked up a controller or a keyboard to race against their friends. Netherlands based developer Gamious hopes to build upon this shared communal experience with their upcoming PC title, Team Racing League.

Though still undergoing some development, Team Racing League already showcases some features which set it apart from some of its competitors in the genre. Taking inspiration from some arcade based titles, Team Racing League was designed without the newbie friendly features that some might come to expect from more casual racing games, such as items, boosts or targeting abilities. Instead, the game focuses on skill, 3 vs. 3 team-play and cooperation. In order to access number of controls that each racer possesses, they must be linked with a teammate. Derailing one’s opponents is similarly a team objective; you will not be winning any races as a lone wolf. Much of one’s skill level in this game will then be determined by how well one can work and communicate with a team. This might be a bit discouraging to some players who prefer to go it alone. As of the current development build, there is no option for 1 vs. 1 racing.

The maps available for testing were rather small and simple. There were some in built gaps and destructible sections of railing in a few of the maps, but for the most part each course offered was very straight-forward.. In my opinion, this simplicity is to the benefit of the gameplay. Though the base map lacks in obstacles, ramps or boosts, there is, therefore, more room for a team to set up its own boosts or obstacles through linking up with a teammate. This ensures that no two races will play exactly the same. My only hope is that the developer will include tracks of larger scale in the future, as this will only lead to more variability and, therefore, more fun strategies to try out. While the game offers the option to play either with a console controller or with a basic keyboard, the more complex controls feel very clunky on the keyboard. For me, at least, the controller was a must.

Overall, I think that Gamious presents a strong offering into the racing game genre with Team Racing League. With its emphasis on teamplay and skill, it raises interesting opportunities for a truly competitive environment in the future. I think that this title will definitely be one to watch out for. Team Racing League will be available for early access on August 11, 2017.
