PC PREVIEW of Infestation World

This is Gaming Cypher’s sneak peek preview of Electronics Extreme’s Infestation World, an open-world sandbox survival game with a focus on competitive multiplayer modes, releasing worldwide in Q2 2016.

Infestation World is the next in line free-to-play zombie survival game created by the same developers of Infestation: Survivor Stories. Taking place in an open, zombie-decimated world, the survivor must fight off hordes of zombies and hostile players in order to survive.

Upon entering the menu page, the player can create and customize a survivor with a starting inventory and specific survival traits. Upon finishing character creation and customization, the player has the option to enter an open-world survival or a player-versus-player server. At the time of review, there are only two maps and there is no single player option. The open-world servers boast an impressive 100 player map limit, while the smaller PVP maps can host up to 40 players. In the open-world, players are spawned randomly through the map. Once you die, you are subsequently removed from the server and a respawn timer given for that survivor. The PVP maps feature two different modes, a time attack and a normal death match, featuring fixed team spawns. Time attack features a timer with unlimited respawns, and the team that acquires the most amounts of kills wins the match. In a death match, players only have one life and a round ends when one side is annihilated.

Infestation World definitely places a heavier emphasis on player versus player interactions rather than the survival aspect, with a mass variety guns and ammo compared to a small variety of food and water. There are more than thirty gun varieties available, with shotguns, pistols, semi-machine guns, assault rifles, and sniper rifles. The ammo system can be confusing at times but the variety is there. The only food choices available are cans of soda and granola bars. Some armour, such as ghillie suits, S.W.A.T. armour, and tactical helmets are available.

The open-world gameplay is rather limited, as item drops from zombies and items spawns has not been properly implemented. Zombies appear in hordes and there is no way to replenish resources outside of restocking inventory back at the main menu. The only option is to walk into a no-fire friendly zone to access a vault. Vehicles have not been implemented yet, making it difficult to traverse the map or find other players.  In the battle maps, team color and team tags are not displayed unless the cross hair is directly above a survivor, making it difficult to determine who is on your team.

The graphics and framerates of Infestation World are of a very high quality, with plenty of customization. The gameplay is very solid, albeit with many unimplemented features. Considering that Infestation World is only in the beta phase, I would give it 4 out of 5, for the current features and its solid direction in finalizing content.
