Killing Floor 2 PS4 Review

If you enjoy a game that has a lot of violence, blood, heavy metal music, and zombies then Killing Floor 2 is the perfect game for you. Developed by Tripwire Interactive in collaboration with Deep Silver and Iceberg Interactive, Killing Floor 2 was designed to be a Sci-Fi Horror first person shooter. The game has been released on November 18, 2016 for both Windows PC and PlayStation 4.

Killing Floor 2 takes place in Europe where an outbreak has occurred due to a failed experiment by Horizon Biotech. Most of the population has been converted into revolting and powerful creatures known as Zeds. These Zeds are more or less zombies and will stop at nothing until you and your team are eliminated. Some of these Zeds are very powerful and have their own special abilities. Tripwire did an outstanding job at giving these Zeds creative and cringe worthy names which really add to the effect of the game. Some of these names include, Fleshpound, Bloat, Clot, Stalker, and many more. Some of these Zeds are known to be very difficult to kill and you must work hard to eliminate them all.

There is a group of survivors that have banded together to attempt to stop this outbreak, and it is left in your hands to choose which character you will play as. Your mission is to work alone or to work with a team through online matchmaking to kill every Zed and survive each round in the game. There are three options when it comes to game length: 4 rounds, 7 rounds and 10 rounds. The more rounds, the longer the game will be and the more Zeds you will have to kill. Once you finish the last round, a final boss will appear and you must defeat them to completely win that game. There is a selection of 12 possible players that you can choose from, each having their own customization and unlockable content. You are rewarded with unlockable items randomly throughout the game, and it is more likely for you to receive these unlockable items if you win every round of the game.

Not only do you get to choose from a wide variety of characters but you are able to choose from ten different character classes which all have different weapons and abilities. There’s the Berserker which is a melee class. Your character starts the game with a utility shovel as their first weapon. You are able to purchase different weapons and ammunition after each round. The more Zeds you kill, the more cash, also known as “dosh”, you will receive. Another class is the Field-Medic. With this class you are able to heal yourself and teammates much faster. Like any other game, the medic really comes in handy when you’re playing games that have 7 rounds or more. I’ll leave the details regarding the other classes a secret, you’ll have to discover what they all do yourself. Each of these classes can be leveled up to a maximum level of 25. The fun and interesting part about leveling up is when you reach level 5 you unlock your first perk. You are able to choose from two perks that are unlocked once you reach this level. More perks are unlocked at level 10, 15, 20, and 25. These perks can vary depending on the class that is being used, but examples of these perks can be extra health, extra weapon damage, extra ammunition, and many others. This gives you an incentive to level up different classes.

When it comes to game mechanics: you can play on your own and fight the Zed hoard alone or you can choose to be a part of an online matchmaking team which will automatically pair you with a total of 5 other players. There is also a multiplayer option so you can play with your friends. Each round your character starts with weapons that are assigned to them based on which class you choose. As you go through the Zed waves you will make money for each Zed that you kill. Some Zeds give you more money than others. The money you have earned after each wave can be used at the weapon kiosk that is opened only after the wave has been completed. At this kiosk you are able to buy other weapons, armor, and ammunition. You have a limited time to make these purchases so you must make decisions quickly. You are also able to throw money at other players if they need it. If you die during any wave, you will drop your weapons and lose money. It is possible to find your weapons but watch out, the other players might take them. You can check your progress throughout the rounds as well, you can see who is getting the most kills and who has the most money. You are also able to pick and vote which map you and your team want to play on next. There are over 12 maps you can choose from which really helps give you a different effect for each round you play. The one and only downfall to this game is that there are only two bosses. It gets very repetitive fighting the same two bosses over and over again. It becomes less challenging after a while since you learn what the best way to kill the bosses are.

Overall I give this game a 9.5/10. The blood and gore effects are outstanding. The audio used for this game are instrumentals to heavy metal songs which really get you pumped up and ready to kill some Zeds. The controls and mechanics are really easy to learn and use. I like how the game gives you a large selection for character customization, weapon choices, and character classes. I really enjoy the “zed-time” or slow-motion ability. If you perform a headshot or a multi-kill, time will be slowed which allows you to perform some awesome kills. But my favorite part of this game has to be the ability to play as a Zed. I’ve played numerous zombie games and Killing Floor 2 has to be my favorite one to date. Well done Tripwire Interactive on this outstanding game!
