Deus Ex GO Review for iOS

This is Gaming Cypher’s iOS review (done by Trevor Young) of Deus Ex GO by developer Square Enix Montréal.

Being an avid gamer, I have played many different games across many different platforms. I have little experience however with mobile gaming as I generally prefer larger gaming systems.  That being said, I had a pleasant time making my way through Deus Ex GO.

Similar to many of the PC games I’ve reviewed, this game features a touch to move playing style. It differs somewhat from other touch to move games, though, as the movements are regulated. Each level features a different connect-the-dots looking floor plan. Each dot on the level represents a location where your player may stand. Some of these dots are empty and may be freely moved upon, while others hold items such as the ability to become invisible or edit the floor plan to traverse the level. Still others are home to enemies that seek to destroy you from long or short range.

At this point the connect-the-dots idea may not make very much sense, so let me elaborate.  The game is set up as a puzzle. Your player may only move from dot to dot. If one of your movements crosses paths with the line of sight of an enemy, that enemy will attempt to attack.  The puzzle then may only be solved by strategically planning your moves, using the given dots to pass on to the levels exit without being taken down by your enemies. For this reason, it is very useful to make your way to the locations that offer you invisibility or control over the pathways you may take throughout the level.

If at this point it still sounds somewhat complicated, that’s because it is. The developers of Deus Ex GO took great care to ensure that the game couldn’t be beaten in a matter of minutes. Some levels took many, many attempts to complete even with the most complex of strategies. This was my favorite part of the game. It wasn’t a typical mobile game that was easy to beat and could be played without much attention given.  It really requires some thought and forward thinking to make your way deep into this game.

Something to be said about this game is that it becomes very difficult to put down. As the difficulty of the game increases, so does its level of intrigue. The simplicity of the layout will leave you scratching your head and wondering how you haven’t made that key move yet. Many a time I told myself that I would give it just one more try, only to find myself an hour later plotting a scheming, trying to make my way through the landscape. This to me, is the epitome of what a mobile game can achieve. Its layout and playing style are very simple, but the path to success becomes unclear with obstacles blocking seemingly every path.

All in all I would recommend this game to anyone who is in the market for a new app. It is action packed and adventurous, while still offering a play at your own pace style that really brings the whole game together. I rate Deus Ex GO a 9/10.
