Here is what the developer had to say about the game:

Desolate is a hand-painted 2D puzzle adventure game influenced by the developer’s experiences, emotions, and his acceptance of self growing up.. The game told in seven acts, Desolation, The Desolate, Deception, Corruption, Consumption, Depression, and Realization.

In the beginning of the game shadowy figures have invaded your village and you must sacrifice your friends and family to them in order to escape. After realising what you’ve done wrong you need to fix the mistakes you’ve made. But not all mistakes can be fixed by apologising. Sometimes change is needed, but reluctantly sought. Sooner or later you will have to face your inner shadows and your inner self to change for the better.Use the three core interactions of sound, gesture, and touch to communicate with its inhabitants.

Experience the gorgeous world inspired by the vast landscapes of New Zealand, and the uniquely confined architecture of Tokyo.

Featuring a beautiful score by New Zealand musician Ben Tolich. One of the biggest features in desolate is that the whole game is hand-painted. The landscape for desolate has been influenced by where I live and where I am from. I am originally from New Zealand, which has a beautiful landscape, so I put that into the game using references from the Tongariro Alpine Crossing.

I am currently living in Tokyo Japan which has some very small buildings and spaces but the most amazing culture. The buildings featured in desolate are all found around Tokyo. Other parts of the game feature caves from both Nippara and Arizona. Both incredibly beautiful natural formations.
