This is the review for the PC version of Shining Gate Software and Daedalic Entertainment’s horror-adventure Decay – The Mare.
Decay – The Mare for PC and Mac is a horror-adventure game that consists of three episodes. Two episodes are currently available, while the third episode, as well as the full game, will be published by Daedalic Entertainment upon completion of development. In Decay – The Mare, you control Sam, an addict who ends up in an institution named “Reaching Dreams” – hoping to kick his drug problem and clean up his miserable life. But during the first night, something goes wrong and he gets stuck in a seemingly endless nightmare.
Graphics
Decay – The Mare graphics are perfectly matched to this horror title. You get an almost distorted view of scenes. We love the pop-up photos that appear as you enter new rooms or solve different puzzles. We gave the graphics a 5 / 5.
Sound
Decay – The Mare has a great sound, which takes you through level after level. The sound effects run in the background, are not over the top, and match the horror theme nicely. We gave the sound a 5 / 5.
Gameplay
Decay – The Mare is all about solving puzzles from the protagonist’s distorted mind point of view. You get major exploration and puzzle solving in this game. We appreciated the hint feature as sometimes we needed that extra help to move through the stages. This is not a shoot-em-up type of game so don’t look for that type of action. Instead, look for the satisfaction of moving through the stages and solving riddles. We gave the gameplay a 4.5 / 5.
Controls
Decay – The Mare features very simple, point and click controls. We did not run into any glitches so for this reason, we gave the controls a 5 / 5.
Overall
Overall, Decay – The Mare is a lot of spooky fun and even addicting as you run through the stages trying to solve various puzzles. You’ll find yourself thinking back to various rooms and areas in order to find the necessary clues to progress. Well done!
