Whispering Willows INTERVIEW

Gaming Cypher has had the pleasure of interviewing Whispering Willows developer Night Light Interactive and publisher Abstraction Games.

How did you come up with the idea of Whispering Willows? – David Logan with developer Nightlight Interactive

Most of our team went to college in Chico, CA where there was a particularly famous haunted mansion called Bidwell. That was a huge inspiration to us as well as the local history between the natives and white settlers, and the duality of those stories. Between the eeriness of Bidwell and the horrors of the stories we’d read about, we knew we had a lot of material to work with. The idea was easy to get, but the hard part was making the idea happen in a way that would do these old stories justice.

  1. What has been your biggest challenge with Whispering Willows so far? – Ralph Egas with publisher Abstraction Games

Our initial release on Steam didn’t make as much of a splash as we would have liked, but I’m making sure that doesn’t happen with the console releases. When releasing a game like this, it requires so much preparation, planning, and manpower to make sure everything goes off well. I’ve been doing a lot of that, and our PS4/PSVita release has gone very well, but marketing has still been one of the biggest challenges with this game.

  1. Will Whispering Willows be included as a Game Preview on Xbox One? David Logan with developer Nightlight Interactive

Abstraction is really excited that Xbox One is offering the Game Preview program. Whispering Willows is already completed and in final certification, so its not going through it, but we are looking at the process for our upcoming titles. When used right these types of opportunities to connect developers with players are a terrific method to improve gameplay before full launch.

  1. Last but not least, if you could be any video game character, who would you be? – David Logan with developer Nightlight Interactive

I’m really fond of Mustache Pig from Angry Birds. I don’t feel a connection to any of the other pigs — probably because they’re just pixels on a screen, but Mustache Pig really strikes a chord with me. I feel like I can really get inside the character’s head in his complex and multi-faceted portrayal in the game.

Whispering Willows is a horror themed side-scrolling adventure where players take the role of Elena, a young girl determined to solve the mystery behind her missing father. Using a unique amulet gifted from her father, Elena possesses the extraordinary ability to project her spirit outside of her body. While in this spectral form, she can interact with the benevolent spirits and wicked wraiths that used to dwell within the walls of the sinister Willows Mansion. Help Elena use her astral projection to solve puzzles, help lost spirits, and uncover the mysteries behind her missing father. read more

Nintendo Adds New Online Multiplayer Game Mode for Kids and Squids in Splatoon

REDMOND, Wash.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Tower Control, a new game mode, will soon be added to the already available multiplayer modes in Splatoon. This mode will be added to Ranked Battle, which also includes Splat Zones. The objective of Tower Control is to ride a single floating tower into the enemy’s base. Both teams rush toward the tower, which is initially placed in the center of the map, and the tower will start moving automatically once a player climbs aboard. But beware: Riding the tower will increase the chances of being splatted, as every player has his or her target on the tower. Riding the tower alone is pretty tough, encouraging randomly selected teams of players to team up to accomplish their goal. Just like in Ranked Battle and Turf War, players will be rewarded for working together as a team. Surrounding the tower and protecting the player riding the tower, using each stage’s features to gain an advantage, and supporting each other are the keys to victory. Tower Control will be available at 7 p.m. PT on July 1. Fans can tune into a special Treehouse: Live with Splatoon Tower Control at 3 p.m. PT today to get a sneak peek of the new mode. read more
